The Meatball: My Walk on the Wild Side

I haven’t really eaten meat in years. I’ve dabbled with the idea of becoming omnivorous again, but it’s never quite appealed to me.

I went to the doctor a few weeks back, and was told that I have low vitamin B12 again. This prompted me to consider meat-eating for the millionth time, and so, on a shuttle back from Book Expo America, a colleague suggested I try his big-hit-with-the-family meatballs.

The last time I had meatballs was when my Bubby Cyrille used to make them. I have no idea what her recipe consisted of — it always seemed as though she was emptying her fridge in the process — but I loved them. My colleague’s version was a bit more sophisticated.

I only had one — with some gemelli pasta and a delicious marinara — and I don’t regret it. It was delicious, moist, and hearty.

Will I start eating meat again? No. My life as an omnivore lasted for just an evening, but I’m glad I tried something new. If anything, my culinary adventures will be limited to new vegetables. Tonight, I’m trying spaghetti squash. Wish me luck!
